Description of the Facility
Genomics Facility
The Genomics Facility is located on the 9th floor, room 919C of the Hunter North building. The facility houses a group of shared instruments used to analyze DNA, RNA, protein, and radiolabeled substances. All instruments are user-operated, but all users must first receive instruction on each instrument from the facility manager. Users must sign provided logs when using instruments; fees are collected for several of the facility instruments (to defray supply and service contract costs).

Instruments

Applied BioSystems 7500 Real-Time PCR

Applied BioSystems 7500 Real-Time PCR System

7500 Real-Time PCR System is an integrated and versatile platform for the detection and quantification of nucleic acid sequences.  Real-Time PCR combines thermal cycling, fluorescence detection, and application-specific software to measure the cycle-by-cycle accumulation of PCR products in a single-tube homogeneous reaction.  Its five-color detection provides the flexibility to perform a variety of applications including gene expression analysis, pathogen quantitation, SNP genotyping, and plus/minus assays that utilize internal positive controls.

 Thermo Cycler

Applied BioSystems 2720 Thermo Cycler  2720 Thermo Cycler is a small, 96 well platform model.  It is a basic PCR instrument and new users need only minimal instruction to operate the instrument..

 Nano Drop

Thermo Scientific NanoDrop 1000 Spectrophotometer

NanoDrop 1000 Spectrophotometer is a full spectrum (220nm-750nm) spectrophotometer that uses a patented sample retention technology that employs surface tension alone to hold the sample in place.  This eliminates the need for cumbersome cuvettes and other sample containment devices and allows for clean up in seconds.  It is able to measure 1μl samples with high accuracy and reproducibility.

Scintillation Counter  Wallac 1409 Liquid Scintillation Counter
Liquid scintillation counter with moving rack, designed to measure low-energy beta-emissions (e.g. 32P).
 Perkin-Elmer UV/Visible Spectrophotometer Lambda 40  Perkin-Elmer UV/Visible Spectrophotometer Lambda 40
This instrument measures protein and DNA concentrations in liquid samples put into quartz cuvettes.  Single sample measurements are taken.
Perkin-Elmer 650-10S Fluorescence Spectrophotometer Perkin-Elmer 650-10S Fluorescence Spectrophotometer This instrument can measure fluorescence in liquid samples.
Misonix Sonicator 3000  Vibra Cell Sonicator (Sonic & Materials, Inc.) Misonix Sonicator 3000
Konica Minolta SRX-101A X-ray film Developer

Konica Minolta SRX-101A X-ray film Developer

This instrument is housed in a darkroom on the 9th floor, Hunter North, behind the elevators.  The Processor is designed to process medical x-ray sheet film.

Rules of operations
Rules and Regulations

1.  First-time users of any instrument must receive instruction from the Facility Manager.

2.  All users must sign the provided log books each time an instrument is used.

3.  Developer and Fixer chemicals for the Konica Minolta SRX-101A X-ray film Developer are replenished by the facility manager.  Leave a message with facility manager (212-650-3429) if you encounter ANY problems.  Do not leave film stuck in the processor without notifying the manager!

4. The Principal Investigator of each lab will be responsible for his/her laboratory personnel.
5. Report any problems to the manager as soon as possible.
